Intracranial Aneurysms
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Saccular Intracranial Aneurysm (sIA) Disease
- some 3% of us develop sIAs during life on intracranial arteries
- most are too small (median 4mm) to cause any symptoms
- can be occluded when diagnosed to prevent possible rupture
- 3% of IAs are spindle-shaped or fusiformic
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage from Ruptured sIA (sIA-SAH)
- the 3rd most frequent form of stroke (4% to 7% per 100.000 per year)
- affects working-age population (median age 55 years)
- requires immediate diagnostics and neurointensive care
- causes high mortality even after hospital admission (29% after 12 lmonths)
- may cause various longterm neurological and cognitive disorders
Risk Factor of
sIA Disease and sIA-SAH
- age / female gender / smoking / hypertension / sIA family
- hypertension and smoking are important modifiable risk factors
- 10% to 25% of sIA patients belong to sIA families
- 1% of sIA patients carry inherited polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD)

At KUH NeuroCenter (Neurosurgery / Neurology / Kuopio Epilepsy Centre) we uniquely combine neurospecialists for multidisciplinary and personalized care of neurodiseases, to provide the best treatment option for each patient. We function in the same premises, with Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology and Neurointensive Care next door at KUH.
KUH Neurovascular Group
Our microvascular neurosurgeons and endovascular neuroradiologists daily and jointly evaluate and treat intracranial aneurysms and other vascular malformations of the central nervous system – also in the new KUH Hybrid Operation facility.
